Heparina(Heparin ) was discovered by Mac Lean in 1916. It has been medically important as an anticoagulant since its introduction over a half-century ago, and recently a number of new biological activities has been adscribed to it.
Heparina(Heparin ) is a very complex glycosaminoglycan composed of alternate sequences of uronic acid (usually -L-iduronic acid) and -D-glucosamine linked by (14)bonds, with sulphate groups in the glucosamine ring.
|
Heparina(Heparin ) is polydisperse in chain length and heterogeneous in degree and type of sulfatation.

Heparina(Heparin ) possesses numerous activities, but the most important is its anticoagulant property.
Heparina(Heparin ) forms a complex with Antithrombin III, and inhibits several activated blood coagulation factors: XIIa, XIa, Xa, IIa, Thrombin and Kallikrein.
It is also used as a thrombolytic, fat-clearing antiartherosclerotic and as a pottentially effective antiinflammatory agent.

- Acute phase myocardial infartus.
- Prophylactic and curative treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolism.
- Pulmonary embolism.
- Prevention of pulmonary thromboembolism and deep venous thrombosis in pregnancy.
- Peripheral obliterative arterial diseases.
- Atherosclerosis.
- Extra-corporeal circulation (ECC).
- Hemodyalisis.
- Extra-corporeal therapies, such as heart-lung oxygenation and kidney dialysis.
- Open heart surgeries.
- Deep phlebitis.
- Vitreoretinal surgery.
- Topical application on flap survival.
- Topical application for leg ulcers.

A wide range of novel biological activities have recently been under research. Due to their structural complexity and high capacity of biological interaction, Heparin and its derivates are molecules with a huge potential for the development of novel drugs.
The activity of Heparin(Heparin ) is currently being studied in the treatment of numerous diseases:
· Cancer · Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) · Organ transplants · Allergic encephalomyelitis · Allergic rhinitis · Arthritis · Asthma · Irritable bowel syndrome · Pulmonary emphysema · Interstitial cystitis · Cystic Fibrosis · Malaria · Ulcerative Colitis · Inflammatory syndromes · Burns · Ischemia reperfusion injury · Dystocia/protracted labor Many of these studies are in an advanced stage of clinical development, and some of them are supported by Bioiberica Heparin Science.

Heparin(Heparin ) is currently available in bulk quantities. Packed in three plastic bags inside a metal drum weighing 2, 10, 25 and 80 Kg, depending on order quantity.

Heparin Sodium meets current USP, EP and JP monographs .
