What is Chondroprotection?

Chondroprotection is the set of actions to prevent, delay or repair degenerative joint injuries.

Measures for chondroprotection:

· Prevent damage to the joint, such as general trauma, sport injuries and joint diseases.

· Protect the joint and retard its deterioration: avoid overweight, maintain proper body postures, perform moderate physical exercise and strengthen muscles.

· Treat inflammatory processes and articular cartilage injuries with medical (analgesics, anti-inflammatory or chondroprotective drugs) or surgical treatment.

What are chondroprotective drugs?

Chondroprotective drugs protect the articular cartilage, subcondral bone and synovial membrane, which are parts of the joint. This group includes pharmacological drugs that preserve the cartilage and slow down the progression of osteoarthritis.
How do chondroprotective drugs act?

They are slow-acting drugs with maintained effect.

Benefits of chondroprotective treatment:

· Decreased pain and improved mobility.

· Decreased use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

· Monitoring the progression of osteoarthritis.

Oral chondroprotective drugs

This group of drugs includes chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine and diacereina. They are safe and can be taken for a long time. The European Association of Rheumatology (EULAR) and the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER) support the efficacy and safety of chondroprotective drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
