Functional Properties
|
Glucosamine is produced in the body by the addition of an amino group to glucose; which is subsequently acetylated.
Hyaluronan and other glycosaminoglycans are composed, in part, of repeating units of acetyl glucosamine.
Glucosamine is used by the chondrocyte to synthesize proteoglycan, which are secreted into the extracellular matrix.
Glucosamine modulates important functions of the chondrocytes, which might be of therapeutic relevance for people with joint diseases:
Stimulation of proteoglycan synthesis.
Stimulation of the body to manufacture collagen.
Anti-inflammatory activity.
