CS Bio-Active: The Chondroitin tested in the NIH Trial

A few months away from the publication of the results of the NIH Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), the biggest independent clinical trial ever carried out into osteoarthritis, there is a climate of great expectation in the scientific community and pharmaceutical industry.

Conducted by the National Institutes of Health in the United States, the study involves a sample of some 1600 patients and compares the clinical efficacy of Bioibérica´s Chondroitin Sulfate - CS Bio-Active - with glucosamine hydrochloride, used separately or in combination, in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

The results of this study are expected to be revealing, given that it will be the first of its kind to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of these molecules separately and in combination.

Once again, Bioibérica's chondroitin sulfate, CS Bio-Active, has shown itself to be the product of reference. Chosen by the NIH to be tested in this ambitious study, CS Bio-Active is the only Chondroitin Sulfate on the market with proven clinical efficacy.

Bioiberica Symposium at the ACR Meeting

For the first time, the preliminary results of the GAIT Trial will be discussed at a Bioiberica symposium during the ACR Meeting. The results of the trial, carried out by the NIH using CS Bio-Active, Bioiberica's chondroitin, are expected to open up new perspectives in chondroprotection.

The symposium, entitled "Chondroitin Sulfate: Mechanisms of Action and Clinical Response in Osteoarthritis", will take place on 17 November 2005 during the American College of Rheumatology's Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego.

Internationally-renowned researchers in the field of
Rheumatology will discuss the preliminary GAIT results and carry out an extensive review of Chondroitin Sulfate (CS Bio-Active) pre-clinical and clinical data.

This symposium is designed to provide the medical community with all the relevant information and new clinical data regarding Chondroitin Sulfate (CS Bio-Active), from its mechanisms of action and pharmacokinetics to the latest clinical-trial results and evidence of its structure/disease modifying effect.

Bioiberica presents its recent scientific findings during the Spanish Rheumatology Society (SER) conference

The results of this research represent an important finding in the treatment of osteoarthritis. For the first time, they provide evidence that a Symptomatic OA Drug , Chondroitin Sulfate (CS), acts on osteoarthritic subchondral bone.

The findings, which were received with great interest by the medical community, were presented by Bioibérica's Scientific Medical Department during the 31st conference of the Spanish Rheumatology Society (SER) in May this year .

The research was carried out by Bioiberica in conjunction with the research team led by Professors J Martel-Pelletier and JP Pelletier of the OA Research Unit at the University of Montreal with the objective of identifying the mechanisms of action of CS on subchondral bone.

In osteoarthritis, subchondral bone is affected causing it to be considered one of the principle characteristics of the pathology along with cartilage deterioration and inflammation of the synovial membrane.

Through the use of an in vitro model, the findings help explain the mechanisms by which CS has beneficial effects on the process of remodelling subchondral bone in osteoarthritis. In other words, these findings provide evidence of CS's chondroprotective action and capacity to modify the course of osteoarthritic disease.
