GAIT Study - Encouraging data on the efficacy of the combination

NIH GAIT Study - Encouraging data on the efficacy of
the combination Chondroitin and Glucosamine
The
results of the study, presented during the American College of
Rheumatism (ACR) Meeting, are highly relevant on a scientific level
as this was a large-scale clinical trial carried out by a completely
independent organisation (the US National Institute of Health -
NIH). CS TM Bio-Active, Bioiberica's chondroitin sulfate, was chosen
by the NIH for use in this study because of its high standards of
quality and safety and its science behind.
The encouraging
results were highlighted at the conclusion of the abstract published by the ACR: "Combination
Glucosamine (G) Chondroitin Sulfate (CS) is effective in treating
moderate to severe knee pain due to OA".
Even though the
primary outcome of the study showed that in the overall population
the positive response to G and CS was not statistically significant,
further exploratory analysis evidence conclusive data that show the
efficacy of this agents in various sub-groups of patients.
In fact, 79.2% of patients with moderate to severe pain
responded positively to treatment with Chondroitin Sulfate and
Glucosamine in combination, exceeding not only placebo (54.3 %) but
also Celecoxib (69.4%) the reference drug or positive control.
According to scientists, these data show that there are
sub-groups of OA patients who, depending on pain, functional
disability, degree of radiological OA, etc. do not always respond to
the same treatment in the same way.
In the discussion of the
results, the investigators highlighted limitations of the study such
as the high placebo effect observed and the difficulty of detecting
improvement among patients with little pain.

NIH GAIT Study - Chondroitin effective in Joint
Swelling and K-L Grade 2 OA
New data from the NIH
study reveal the efficacy of Chondroitin Sulfate in joint swelling
as well as its differential effect on Osteoarthritis Symptoms
related to degree of Radiographic Involvement.
The results
were presented by Dr. Clegg, the main researcher of the NIH study,
at the OARSI Osteoarthritis World Conference and the CME Symposium
on Chondroitin Sulfate which took place during the ACR Annual
Scientific Meeting. LINK
According to the data presented, Chondroitin Sulfate was the only
treatment effective in reducing joint swelling . Joint swelling is
brought about by an increase of fluid in the joint space and
involves swelling of the joint, pain and functional disability. It
is a very common condition among people suffering from OA , and
occurs in about 50% of cases.
These results also confirm the
efficiency of Chondroitin Sulfate in patients suffering from K-L
grade 2 knee osteoarthritis, that is with radiological degrees of
initial OA , when there is not yet any structural damage to the
joint. The data are statistically significant for functional
capacity and stiffness. This response is similar to that achieved
with Celecoxib.
Once more, it was shown that there are
sub-groups of OA patients and that Chondroitin Sulfate is an
effective treatment for OA . As always, more clinical studies are
required to confirm the results observed.

of the NIH Study The results of the NIH study are
expected to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine
within the first quarter of 2006. New England Journal

Chondroitin
Symposium The CME Symposium on Chondroitin Sulfate which
took place following the ACR Meeting was highly successful,
attracting a large attendance by participating physicians. It was
also outstanding because of the high level demonstrated by the
speakers who presented new data explaining the efficacy of
Chondroitin Sulfate on both a symptomatic and structural level.

four new scientific studies on the efficacy of its products at the
10th World Congress on Osteoarthritis - OARSI (Osteoarthritis
