| Bioibérica Presents Symposium on Synovitis at EULAR
Congress As a company specializing in research in osteoarthritis (OA) and chondroitin sulfate, Bioibérica has decided to study the synovial membrane in cases of OA in greater depth due to growing interest in its role in the disease and the new scientific findings from the GAIT trial, which indicate that the synovial membrane is an important therapeutic target and that chondroitin sulfate is an effective treatment. These data were presented at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR) in June 2007 in Barcelona. Satellite symposium carried out by Bioiberica was entitled: THE ROLE OF SYNOVITIS IN THE PHYSIOPATHOLOGY OF OSTEOARTHRITIS: NEW EFFECTS OF CHONDROITIN SULFATE This symposium focuses on the role of synovitis in OA, its diagnosis and treatment with Chondroitin Sulfate based on new data on its efficacy in synovitis. Synovitis is an inflammatory process of the synovial membrane and constitutes one of the main characteristics of inflammatory joint diseases, with a prevalence of about 50% among people suffering from OA. Results from GAIT (Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial) Study demonstrated that Chondroitin Sulfate reduced very significantly (p 0.01) synovitis / joint effusion at 6 months of treatment. After this successful symposium, two others will be held at the international congresses of other major organizations in 2007: the American College of Rheumatism (ACR) and Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI).
