BIOIBERICA
IS THE FIRST COMPANY TO OBTAIN THE CERTIFICATE OF SUITABILITY FOR
CHONDROITIN SULPHATE BIOIBERICA continues its
international leadership by becoming the first company in the world
to obtain the Certificate of Suitability for Chondroitin Sulphate
Sodium. This certificate is awarded by the European Directorate for
the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM), the body of the
Council of Europe that supervises and controls the composition and
production of pharmaceutical substances to the strict standards of
the European Pharmacopoeia in order to guarantee a quality framework
for pharmaceutical active ingredients. (more)

FINDINGS ON HYAL-JOINT EFFICACY PRESENTED AT OARSI During
the last World Congress of the Osteoarthritis Research Society
International (OARSI) held on December 6-9, 2007 in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, BIOIBERICA presented a poster with its new findings on
Hyal-Joint efficacy, which suggest that oral administration of
hyaluronic acid (HA) increases HA levels in synovial fluid and could
also be related to improvements in the clinical condition of
affected joints. (more)

AT THE WORLD CONGRESS ON OSTEOARTHRITIS (OARSI) As part of
its program of continued research into the efficacy of Chondroitin
Sulfate (CS) in the treatment of synovitis, BIOIBERICA sponsored a
symposium on The Role of Synovitis in the Physiopathology of
Osteoarthritis: New Effects of Chondroitin Sulfate at the most
recent World Congress on Osteoarthritis (OARSI), held in Fort

BIOIBERICA IS THE FIRST COMPANY TO OBTAIN THE

BIOIBERICA’s Chondroitin Sulphate Sodium with the strongest
guarantees given that its quality is suitably controlled by the
CHONDROITIN SULPHATE SODIUM monograph Nº 2064 of the European
Pharmacopoeia. Thanks to this new achievement, BIOIBERICA once
again confirms its leadership as a reference company in the field of
chondroprotection.

NEW FINDINGS ON HYAL-JOINT EFFICACY PRESENTED AT
OARSI
During the last World Congress of the
Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) held on
December 6-9, 2007 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, BIOIBERICA presented
a poster with its new findings on Hyal-Joint efficacy, which suggest
that oral administration of hyaluronic acid (HA) increases HA levels
in synovial fluid and could also be related to improvements in the
clinical condition of affected joints. These new findings are the
result of a double-blind vs. placebo trial carried out by BIOIBERICA
on 12 horses with radiographic diagnosis of osteochondrosis. On
Day 0 of the trial, no differences in intra-articular HA
concentrations were detected between the two groups of horses.
However, it was subsequently observed that HA levels increased
numerically in the group treated with Hyal-Joint, but decreased in
the placebo group. By Day 90, in addition to increased HA levels
in the group treated with Hyal-Joint, numerical improvements were
observed on the synovial-effusion scale, together with improvements
in the treated horses’ degree of lameness. These results reveal a
possible carry-over effect. These findings are considered to be
significant because HA levels in synovial fluid usually drop in
cases of osteoarthritis.

BIOIBERICA AT THE WORLD CONGRESS ON OSTEOARTHRITIS
(OARSI)
As part of its program of continued research
into the efficacy of Chondroitin Sulfate (CS) in the treatment of
synovitis, BIOIBERICA sponsored a symposium on The Role of Synovitis
in the Physiopathology of Osteoarthritis: New Effects of Chondroitin
Sulfate at the most recent World Congress on Osteoarthritis (OARSI),
held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 6-9, 2007. New
scientific findings indicate that the synovial membrane plays a
fundamental role in the development of osteoarthritis (OA).
Synovitis is an inflammatory process of the synovial membrane and
constitutes the main symptom of inflammatory joint disease. In fact,
the prevalence of synovitis in OA patients is 50%. Recent studies
also show that the symptoms of synovitis/joint effusion are
significantly reduced after 6 months’ treatment with CS. These
studies attracted great interest among the international medical and
scientific community. The symposium sponsored by BIOIBERICA at
the OARSI confirmed the significant role of synovitis in OA, as well
as its diagnosis and treatment. This most recent indication has
convinced BIOIBERICA to continue its strategy of investing in CS and
carrying out research into synovitis. BIOIBERICA also presented
symposia on CS and synovitis at the EULAR Congress (June 2007) and
the ACR Congress (November 2007). In 2008, BIOIBERICA plans to
attend all the major international conferences and congresses on
rheumatology and osteoarthritis.

HEPARIN
SCIENCE: NEW BIOIBERICA BUSINESS UNIT Within its process
of continued expansion and growth, BIOIBERICA has created a new
business unit, HEPARIN SCIENCE, whose work will focus on the
development of heparin projects. The goal of the HEPARIN SCIENCE
business unit is to consolidate BIOIBERICA’s position on the heparin
market, the specialty that was, in fact, the reason for the
company’s creation in 1975. This important new business unit is an
exciting and ambitious project that will enable BIOIBERICA to
maintain its leadership in the field of heparin production, in which
it offers guarantees of top quality in addition to being a benchmark
for the scientific community. This new organization will also
enable the JOINT CARE DIVISION to specialize in joint-health
projects. The consolidation of the JOINT CARE DIVISION as a
strategic focal point of research and growth is a stimulating new
challenge for the division.
BIOIBERICA
VETERINARY CONSOLIDATES ITS INTERNATIONAL POSITION:
BIOIBERICA’s Veterinary Division consolidated its international
position in 2007, thanks to increased sales of its products in
Europe. Particularly successful was COSEQUIN, a product for animals
with joint problems whose sales considerably increased compared with
2006. This growth confirms the positive results of the
Veterinary Division’s increase in exports.
