Bioiberica, a global life science company with more than 25 years' experience in the veterinary and animal nutrition sector is pleased to announce that its science-backed companion animal health ingredients, Biosfeen® and Dermial®, have been recognised in the Cat Skin & Coat Care Product of the Year, as part of the 2023 Pet Innovation Awards. This year’s winning product was DermalEase/Atopivet drops and mousse – a topical skincare solution designed to support healthy, hydrated and nourished skin – from Protexin® Veterinary, a trusted brand of Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM). The awards shortlist comprised some of the most pioneering companies from across the pet care industry, demonstrating the strength of ADM and Bioiberica’s partnership in powering industry-leading innovation in the pet health space.

“We’re proud to see the impact our companion animal health ingredients – Biosfeen® and Dermial® –have had in contributing to ADM’s award-winning product – DermalEase/ Atopivet,” comments Luis Solera, CEO at Bioiberica. We always aim to work closely with our partners to push the boundaries of what's possible, so that together, we can deliver truly innovative science-based products for the markets we serve. This latest award win is recognition of those efforts and we’d therefore like to extend our congratulations to all involved.”

Skin health is essential in supporting overall wellness in cats and dogs. The skin plays a vital role in regulating bodily processes, such as immunity, hydration and temperature regulation. To support healthy, hydrated and nourished skin, ADM’s DermalEase/Atopivet range leverages Bioiberica’s active pet health ingredients – Biosfeen®, a lipid extract unique profile of sphingomyelins and ceramides and Dermial®, a source of glycosaminoglycans with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid. These powerful ingredients have been shown to provide dual levels of support, including a healthy skin barrier of the epidermis and aid for the structure, elasticity and hydration levels of the inner-layer dermis.

A recent study published in Veterinary Sciences found that Biosfeen® and Dermial® enhance filaggrin and antimicrobial peptide expression, which are important for the skin’s barrier function. In previous studies, Biosfeen® was shown to increase ceramide levels and improve clinical signs related to atopic dermatitis (a common chronic inflammatory skin disease in canines), and Dermial® demonstrated efficacy in enhancing the proliferation and migration of skin cells, increasing elastin production and improving skin hydrating capacity.

“There’s a clear need to provide pet owners with effective, non-invasive options to support skin health in cats and dogs. For manufacturers looking to develop new solutions to address this, Biosfeen® and Dermial® present an exciting opportunity, as they have been shown to play a key role in maintaining dermal health in pets,” comments Xavier García, Animal Health and Plant Health Business Units Director at Bioiberica. “We continue to look for new ways to innovate and look forward to working with our partners to keep shaping the future of companion animal health.”

Over 2,000 nominations were submitted for the fifth annual Pet Innovation Awards, which provide public recognition for achievements of pet care industry companies, services and products including Apparel, Grooming & Cleaning, Food & Treats, Health, Retailers & Services and more.
