The first functional dairy milk for athletes’ joint health with Mobilee® is among the finalists for the World Dairy Innovation Awards 2015, hosted by the FoodBev Media international publishing group. These awards give recognition to the most innovative ingredients, products, brands and media campaigns within the field of everyday consumption products.

Mobilee® is a natural product containing hyaluronic acid (a natural component in joints that plays a lubricating and protecting role, thus enhancing mobility), collagen and other polysaccharides, developed by Bioiberica, a Spanish biotech company specializing in osteoarthritis and joint care. The company has carried out four randomized, double blind, placebo controlled nutritional intervention trials that concluded that the daily consumption of this functional ingredient improves the mechanical and muscular function of joints and reduces pain in people suffering from joint pain.

Mobilee® has been added to a milk drink and is already marketed in Spain in a finished milk drink product by Central Lechera Asturiana (one of the leading Spanish diary companies, number one in milk) that helps preserve and improve athletes’ joints health.

The awards have given recognition to the innovation that this new functional product represents in the food industry, more precisely within the dairy sector. The judging panel considered almost 220 entries from 30 countries in 18 categories. “We saw a fantastic range of products this year as innovation continues to ignite consumers growing interest in dairy”, said FoodBev Media’s Bill Bruce

“We all feel much honored by this award, which recognizes our firm focus on innovation”, declared Daniel Martínez, R&D director at Bioiberica’s Human Health area, shortly being informed about the award.

It is estimated that in Europe there are more than 15 million active people, aged 40 to 65, that suffer from joint pain. In the US, this figure reaches 19 million people. Furthermore, according to the WHO, by 2020 osteoarthritis will become the fourth most common cause of disability worldwide because of the progressive aging of the population.
