A case of thrombosis in pregnancy

It is estimated that one or two women in a thousand may have thrombosis during pregnancy. In fact, gestation increases the risk of thrombosis 3 to 6 times compared to the situation of non-pregnancy. Cristina Domingo had this complication in her eighth month and thanks to heparin could overcome it. This is her story.

When I was eight months pregnant, I started feeling pain in my groin. The midwife told me that was normal with a belly like mine; a little pang in the leg was not surprising. But then my leg turned purple. We went to the doctor…

A young woman came in. she was pregnant and complained of a pain in her leg. What did we do? Look at the leg. What was going on with that leg? It was red and hard. We did a sonogram and found that this person had a thrombosis.

That meant complete bed rest, I couldn’t get out of bed, I was admitted, Heparin every 12 hours…

First, to stop the thrombosis from growing and to treat the thromboembolic disease, and second, for the pregnancy to run its course. After our tests, we found that this person had a genetic predisposition for thromboembolic disease. That is something found relatively frequently by hospital hematologists.

Starting then, I was on Heparin until three months after my daughter was born. They did checks and found that the clot had fully dissolved. Luckily, I had no valve damage in the area. The vein remained intact.
