Pau Asensio, Peggy’s owner
Her name is Peggy, she is an american bulldog. She is 13 years old and her mobility is quite reduced due to all the surgeries she has gone through.
Vicent Altamirano, Veterinary Clinic Santa Marta (Mataró, Spain)
Unfortunately, Peggy started having growth problems when she was around 7 and a half or 8 months -‐ she was diagnosed with an ununited anconeal process that was unfortunately affecting both her elbows. Therefore, we had to put her under surgery and, if I remember well, she had surgery first in her left elbow and after a month and a half she had surgery in her right elbow.
She had problems, for example, getting into the car, when she was lying down and she had to get up she would limp a bit... and you could see that she was not comfortable. We went to the vet, she went through some tests and she had to start getting
surgeries in her posterior cruciate ligaments . I am sure that if she didn't have surgery, she would have ended up unable to walk. Also, thanks to the medication that I am currently giving her, her quality of live has improved a lot. The medication has extended her life so much, without it she would have lived half the age she is now.
A vital part of the treatment is the medicine given to the dog, which is mainly the administration of chondroprotectors.
Whenever there is a severe problem with a joint fracture, due to a growth problem, the chondroprotector that we use the most is "cosequín", and the truth is that it has been essential because we have a combination of a couple of substances, which are chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine.
Since they are combined, not only do they produce hyaluronan and collagen, which are two very important components of the synovial fluid, but they also have an anti-‐ inflammatory effect, and they slightly delay the degeneration of joints and especially cartilages, and they keep the cartilage much more flexlible and so the joint gets better. Well, with my experience, especially with Peggy, who I´ve known since she was born, I'm very sure that at her age, if it wasn't for her owner, and for following my advice, and the administration of the product, she wouldn't be able to walk as she is doing now. Without a doubt.
