This molecule, which is essential for human health, has played an intrinsic role in our history. Heparin is the most widely used anticoagulant and antithrombotic in the world and is featured on the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines. Its use prevents and treats thrombosis, a disease that, according to the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH), accounts for one in four deaths worldwide. It is estimated that heparin saves more than 100 million lives each year.
