About Heparin

It’s more than an API — it’s a lifeline. Saves more than 100 million lives every year and is considered an essential medicine by the World Health Organisation.

The heparin molecule and its derivatives show enormous potential for the development of new drugs and applications. We are actively exploring this in close partnership with leading laboratories and research centres worldwide, aiming to unlock the full potential of this life-saving molecule.

Heparin – Life Flows in You

sodium

What is heparin sodium?

Heparin sodium belongs to the family of glycosaminoglycans, a group of linear polysaccharides with a negative charge formed by alternating repeating units of an amino sugar and a uronic acid.

In the case of heparin, the amino sugar is D-glucosamine (N-acetylated or N-sulfated), while the uronic acid may be L-iduronic acid or D-glucuronic acid.

With a high safety and confidence profile, heparin sodium is a widely tested active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) that exhibits multiple biological activities. It’s most famous for its anticoagulant properties, an activity made possible by its interaction with coagulation-inhibiting blood proteins such as antithrombin III (ATIII). Here, heparin acts as catalyst, accelerating the speed at which ATIII inhibits various procoagulant proteins, notably factors Xa and IIa (Thrombin). In this way, heparin prevents the formation of fibrin, one of the key components of a blood clot.

New research

A large number of new biological activities are currently being investigated. Because of its structural complexity and its great biological interaction capacity, heparin and its derivatives are molecules with huge potential for development of new drugs. The activity of heparin sodium is currently being studied in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including:

  • Cancer

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Organ transplantation

  • Allergic encephalomyelitis

  • Allergic rhinitis

  • Arthritis

  • Asthma

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
