The use of heparin in pregnancy is increasingly common to avoid thromboembolic complications, abortions or delays in fetal growth. In this story, Monica tells us how thanks to heparin, she was able to bring her third pregnancy to term.

Mònica Rodríguez, patient affected by thrombosis

We had two kids and decided to have a third. During the pregnancy, everything was going well until during a check-up, when I was 22 o 23 weeks along, they found that the fetus was dead. They told me if I wanted to get pregnant again, I’d need to take heparin throughout the pregnancy.

In our day-to-day practice, we see many patients who think heparin will solve all their assisted reproduction issues. That is when we have to explain that this could be true if it is justified.

They found I apparently have a genetic disorder that causes my blood to coagulate more easily. This becomes even more evident during pregnancy.

These patients, if there were no heparin, would suffer repeated miscarriages, or intrauterine fetal deaths, or late-term miscarriages. They could have pregnancies with problems due to a lack of liquid or delayed growth. Thanks to heparin, these patients can have a better prognosis and a better perinatal result.

In the end, we decided to have a third child. In that pregnancy as soon as I found I was pregnant, I started getting heparin shots.

In these cases heparin is essentially going to help them have their child.
