• This is the main conclusion of a new study that will be presented today in Granada during the 20th International congress of nutrition.

  • Rooster comb extract is rich in hyaluronic acid, which has been demonstrated to improve muscle strength, loss of synovial fluid and pain in people suffering from knee joint pain.

Granada, September 19th, 2013. Regular consumption of skimmed yoghourt enriched with rooster comb extract, an ingredient rich in hyaluronic acid, is healthy for joints. These are the conclusions of a new study being presented tomorrow in Granada during the 20th International Congress of Nutrition.

“To be more precise, we have observed that adding rooster comb extract to daily use food such as milk products improves mechanical and muscular function of joints, loss of synovial fluid and pain in people suffering from knee pain”, explained lead researcher Daniel Martínez, R&D director at the human healthcare area in Bioibérica, a Spanish biotech company specializing in joint healthcare. They plan to launch this new component under the trademark Mobilee™

This research project was a randomized, controlled, double blind clinical study carried out by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Reus, Tarragona) together with the POAL institute of Rheumatology (Barcelona). The study involved 148 volunteers who suffered from moderate knee pain. The participants were divided into two groups: the first one took one daily skimmed yoghurt supplemented with 80 mg of rooster comb extract (Mobilee™) while the second group took the same yoghourt without the supplement.

The results shown that, after three months, the group taking Mobilee improved knee flexibility and pain, especially in men older than 50. “These data confirm the findings published this year by the specialized journal Mediterranean Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism[1], said Martínez.

Furthermore, Bioiberica carried out stability, security and toxicity studies that determined that adding rooster comb extract is a safe and stable product that does not alter the food’s smell or taste.

“We are used to consuming foods containing supplements of calcium, omega-3, bifidus or vitamins that help us to stay healthy. But there are none for joints”, explained the lead researcher.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently issued a favorable opinion about the security of adding rooster comb extract to milk products suitable for daily use. At the same time, a panel of American experts working independently has also determined that adding rooster comb extract to a large range of foods and drinks is safe, giving it the status of GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).
