  • Mobilee® is rich in hyaluronic acid, polysaccharides and collagen that, when taken on a daily basis, help to keep joints healthy
  • In Spain, Mobilee® is already marketed in a milk drink that helps protect the health of a sportsperson’s joints
  • Bioibérica presented new data at the Vitafoods Europe 2015 exhibition, the biggest international event for nutraceuticals and functional foods
  • In Europe, more than 15 million active people aged between 40 and 65 years are thought to suffer joint pain; in the United States, the figure is over 19 million

Geneva (Switzerland), 5 May 2015- Regular consumption of Mobilee®-supplemented dairy products reduces pain and improves mechanical and muscle articular function in people with joint problems. This was confirmed by a meta-analysis and a clinical study presented by Bioibérica in the Vitafood international exhibition, held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The first study was a meta-analysis of two double-blind, randomised, controlled trials, in which a total of 148 volunteers with moderate joint pain participated. These were split into two groups: one group took a daily low-fat dairy product supplemented with 80 g Mobilee® and the other group took the dairy product with no added ingredients. Results show that after 3 months of consumption, the group taking Mobilee® had improved knee bending, reduced synovial fluid effusion, and less perceived pain in the affected knee, particularly in men over 50 years of age. The studies were carried out in collaboration with the Rovira i Virgili University, Reus (Tarragona, Spain) and the POAL Rheumatology Institute, Barcelona (Spain).

“These results confirm that if this functional ingredient is added to foods consumed on a daily basis, we will be supplementing our diet with steady amounts of hyaluronic acid, polysaccharides and collagen that will help maintain joint health”, explains Daniel Martínez, study investigator and the Director of  Human Health R&D at Bioibérica.

The second study, published in Genes & Nutrition, concludes that Mobilee® supplements reduce pain and synovial effusion, improve knee mobility and modify the expression of genes associated with connective tissue and joints. In this study, blood samples from 20 participants were analysed before and after taking a Mobilee®-supplemented dairy product. The results showed modified expression levels of 165 genes.

Mobilee® is a functional ingredient containing high amounts of hyaluronic acid, polysaccharides and collagen, that has been approved as a Novel Food by the European Commission, and with GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status in the United States. This is the first ingredient showing benefits in preserving joint health that can be added to foods for daily consumption.
In fact, Mobilee® is already marketed in Spain by Central Lechera Asturiana and Sport Life in a milk drink that helps protect the health of a sportsperson’s joints. “We are very used to seeing and taking foods that contain calcium, Omega 3, bifidus or vitamins, and using them to keep healthy, but until now, nothing was available for the joints. Mobilee® is a natural extract with a unique composition that we will soon see added to all sorts of food and drinks”, explains the investigator.

Moreover, Bioibérica has carried out stability, safety and toxicity studies showing that this new ingredient is a safe, stable product that does not change the smell or the taste of the food to which it is added.
