Slow Symptomatic Action Drug for Osteoarthritis

Chondroitin sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan  composed of a chain of alternating N-acetylgalactosaminedisaccharides and N-glucuronic acid. It is usually associated with proteins constituting aggregates of high molecular weight called proteoglycans. A chain of chondroitin may be formed by more than 100 individualsugars , each of which can be sulfated in different positions and numbers.

This is an important component of most of the tissues of vertebrates and invertebrates and is mainly present in those that have a large extracellular matrix, like those that form the body's connective tissuecartilageskinblood vessels, and also ligaments and tendons.

A part of aggrecan, chondroitin sulfate is the main component of cartilage. The level of aggregation and the high loads of the sulfate groups of chondroitin sulphate gives these proteoglycans high water-retention properties, which gives cartilage its high compression resistance characteristic.

Degenerative joint diseases, like osteoarthritis, lead to the deterioration and loss of joint cartilage. A key phase in the osteoarthritic degeneration process is the loss of proteoglycan (formed by chondroitin sulfate) from the cartilage and the exposure of its collagen network to mechanical dysfunction.

Chondroitin sulfate is considered to be an SYSADOA (Symptomatic Slow Acting Drug for Osteoarthritis) and is currently recommended by national and international treatment guides. Several clinical trials and meta-analyses confirm its efficacy and safety.  Furthermore, chondroitin sulfate is also used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of joint pathologies in animals like dogs, cats and horses.

As a drug, chondroitin belongs to the M01AX group: Other anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic non steroids (ATC -Anatomic Therapeutic Chemical Classification- of the World Health Organisation). The treatment dose varies between 800 and 1200 mg/day and a minimum treatment of 3 months is recommended. A number of clinical trials demonstrate that it reduces joint pain and improves mobility. It can also control the progress of the disease and recent studies suggest that it can reduce the need for knee prosthesis implants.

Bioiberica also have a nutraceutical Chondroitin Sulphate.

Chondroitin sulfate by Bioibérica

Different manufacturing processes and different sources of biological starting material can give rise to chondroitin sulfate molecules with very different chemical-structural properties, especially regarding their content, molecular weight and impurities profile.

The great variety existing between different chondroitin sulfate molecules can affect the efficacy of the end product: they may have different pharmacokinetic, absorption and even pharmacological properties.

Similarly, this variability in origin and manufacture can affect the safety of the end product and may even have catabolic and negative effects on the joint, cause allergic reactions in the organism, or have other more serious safety problems, such as the presence of viruses or prions.

Bioibérica uses the highest quality raw materials, which, together with its processing method, guarantees chondroitin sulfate 100% richness every time, minimizing the presence of impurities and overcoming the quality requirements of both the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP).

Bioibérica controls the traceability of all the tons of chondroitin sulfate it produces, up to the slaughterhouse, where it also conducts audits to ensure that GMP standards and other standards for products of animal origin are complied with.

For all these reasons, chondroitin sulfate produced by Biobérica was the standard approved in 2004 by the European Pharmacopoeia as Benchmark Chemical Substance and was also selected in the US by the National Institute of Health (NIH) for the execution of the GAIT clinical trial (Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial)  Furthermore, most clinical trials executed with pharmaceutical grade chondroitin sulfate used Bioibérica's material. For all these reasons, Bioibérica's chondrotoin sulfate is of the highest quality and has the most clinical evidence of its efficacy and safety as a treatment for osteoarthritis.
