Prolivet® is a food supplement for dogs and cats that contributes towards maintaining liver function.
S-Adenosylmethionine (also known as SAMe) is a molecule found in all cells of the body. SAMe is of special importance in hepatoyctes, from where it has the ability to positively influence the whole body's metabolism. SAMe contributes to the formation of Glutathione, the most important defence mechanism against oxidative stress, since it helps to detoxify harmful molecules, making them soluble and thus facilitating their excretion. Glutathione protects hepatocytes from cell deterioration and death (apoptosis). When the liver is damaged, the enzyme activity of SAMe synthetase decreases. This causes methionine to increase and SAMe levels to decrease. Due to this reduction, less Glutathione is synthesised, causing liver failure which can ultimately affect the body’s whole metabolism.
Silybin is the most abundant and active component of silymarin, a fruit extract from milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Silybin neutralises free radicals, thus protecting the liver cells against oxidative damage. Silybin inhibits the adhesion of toxins, as well as the production of leukotrienes, which are involved in the inflammatory response. As for phosphatidylcholine, it is the main precursor/metabolite of choline, and the main constituent of lipoproteins in the bloodstream and cell membranes. It is also the main component of bile, and plays a fundamental role in mitochondrial energy transformation and in the elimination of residues from cellular metabolism.
