Heparinoids

What are heparinoids?

Heparinoids are glycosaminoglycan-based compounds structurally related to heparin, known for their anticoagulant and vasoprotective properties. Though they are most commonly used in the treatment of bruises or superficial vein thrombosis, some combinations of heparinoids have also been formulated into active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for the treatment of thrombotic and vascular conditions.

Notably, these agents exert their effects primarily by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III proteins, which in turn inhibit key coagulation factors. This has the effect of lowering incidences of adverse reactions such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

Heparinoids’ unique molecular compositions and pharmacokinetic characteristics make them particularly suitable for clinical scenarios where conventional heparin therapy is either contraindicated or poorly tolerated. Our pharmaceutical-grade heparinoids are extracted from different tissues of animal origin using gentle processes that guarantee integrity, quality and efficacy.

Potential therapeutic applications

Heparinoids are greater than the sum of their parts. Not only do they possess the same functional properties as their individual components, but the synergy of these substances also produces a unique pharmacological impact. Heparinoids have shown proven therapeutic effects on:

• The activation of lipoprotein removal through the stimulation of lipases responsible for their degradation (lipasemic activity).

• The inhibition of cell proliferation in vascular walls.

• The regulation of plasma protein transport through capillary walls, preventing protein loss in the glomerular structures of the kidney.

• The prevention of lipoprotein deposition in vascular walls and inhibition of cholesterol accumulation in arterial tissue, contributing to decreased atherosclerotic disorders.

   

They have also been shown to:

• Act at the epidermal level as an antiedematous and anticongestive agent, promoting the elimination of minor superficial bleeding, enabling the rapid reabsorption of bruises.

• Impart a hydrating effect due to their chondroitin and dermatan sulfate content.

• Be effective against flaccidity and inflammation of altered epidermal areas due to their anticellulitic and antivaricose properties.

Storage and packing

Storage and handling conditions

Our heparinoids do not require special storage conditions, however we recommend that they be kept in a cool, dry place preferably at temperatures below 40ºC.

Handling

Wear a dust mask, gloves and safety goggles.

Packaging

Our API is delivered as a white powder in triple-packed polyethylene bags, sealed with a polyamide cable tie for drums and cans.

It is available in the following containers according to the quantity and customer specifications:

• 60L, 30L, or 2L cans, 100ml and 15 ml vials.

• The weight limit of our drums is 20 net kg.

• All the containers are fitted with security seals to prevent any potential tampering.
