2016: Centenary of the discovery of Heparin

One hundred years of saving lives

Our history, Bioibérica's history, has always been linked to heparin. It's not every day that we can celebrate that a medicine, still in widespread clinical use and which annually saves more than 100 million lives, turns one hundred years old. If we also take into consideration that most of this medication is produced in Spain and is exported from here across the world, guaranteeing the highest quality and security standards, there are even more reasons to be proud.
This section contains information on the events and initiatives promoted by Bioibérica to celebrate Heparin's centenary.

New applications of heparin

The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and the biotech firm Bioiberica have signed a partnership agreement, during Biospain Congress, to study the development of new compounds derived from heparin to combat malaria.

Institutional event

The centenary of the discovery of heparin was celebrated in Madrid on 17 June 2016 with an event sponsored by His Majesty King Felipe VI. It was an institutional event of a medical and scientific nature to promote heparin and its clinical and social importance.

Dr. Hemker: “Past, present, and future of heparin”

The International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) celebrated this year its annual meeting in Montpellier and devoted the cultural and networking event to the Centenary of the Discovery of Heparin.

Bioiberica is organising the 1st Journalism Awards on Heparin with the goal of acknowledging the best journalism articles and reports on this active ingredient from all of its perspectives. The awards also aim to encourage the work of journalists in reporting and disseminating information on health, economics and the biotech industry in Spain, in the year when the centenary of this biomolecule is being celebrated.
